Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole black lentils (urad dal)
  • 1/4 cup red kidney beans (rajma)
  • 3 cups water (for soaking)
  • 4 cups water (for cooking)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 teaspoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 green chili, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chili powder (for color)
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the black lentils (urad dal) and red kidney beans (rajma) under cold water. Soak them together in water for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the soaked lentils and beans and transfer them to a pressure cooker. Add 4 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Pressure cook for about 6-7 whistles or until the lentils and beans are soft and well-cooked.
  3. In a separate pan, heat ghee or butter. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili (if using). Sauté for another minute.
  6. Add tomato puree and cook until the raw smell disappears and the oil separates from the masala.
  7. Add Kashmiri red chili powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  8. Add the cooked lentils and beans along with any remaining water from the pressure cooker. Mix well.
  9. Add cream and salt to taste. Stir until everything is well combined.
  10. Simmer the dal on low heat for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches the desired consistency.
  11. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and a dollop of butter before serving.
  12. Serve hot with naan, roti, or rice.
